Don Omar signs worldwide publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing

Miami, November 23, 2010 – EMI Music Publishing has signed a global administration deal with Latin urban superstar Don Omar, it was announced today.

Don Omar became one of reggaeton’s first international superstars and in 2006 became the first reggaeton star to break into the Billboard Top 200 album chart top 10 with his album “King Of Kings”. Omar has sold in excess of 5 million albums to date worldwide.

The agreement with EMI Music Publishing will see Omar’s future songwriting work represented by the company’s network of offices around the world. The deal includes rights to songs on his new album “Don Omar Presents: Meet The Orphans,” which was released in the United States last week by Machete Music/Universal.

In addition, EMI Music Publishing will administer Don Omar’s entire song catalog including all of his biggest hits, such as "Pobre Diabla", "Angelito" and over 20 more classic hit songs.  The catalog contains more than 125 songs in total.

“Don Omar Presents: Meet The Orphans” features ‘Hasta Abajo’, which spent 20 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and is nominated for Best Urban Song at this year’s Latin Grammys. The album also includes current single ‘Danza Kuduro’, performed with French rapper Lucenzo, which has topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart. The video for the track has now received more than 16 million views on You Tube and Vevo.  Don Omar additionally stars in the new Fast & The Furious movie, and will also collaborate on the score as well as have five tracks on the soundtrack.

Don Omar has been signed by EMI Music Publishing US Latin Creative Director Leslie Ahrens in Miami, in collaboration with Urban Senior Creative Director Leotis Clyburn in New York.

Don Omar said: “Throughout the years as a songwriter I have always tried to take care of my creations as if they were my own children. There have been many opportunities where I have been offered to have my creations represented by very prestigious companies, and I will always be grateful for their respect of my music and myself.

“Today on the verge of reaching 10 years in my songwriting career, I have found a family that will dedicate time to my creations and that will give them the necessary help so that they will be remembered when I am no longer here. The great EMI Music Publishing family has opened their arms and doors of their immense house to my music. I am filled with pride and peace of mind that my music will be in such good hands.”

Nestor Casonu commented: “Don Omar has written many of the Latin urban songs that have made the genre explode internationally, and opened the door for other artists that followed. This is a very special signing for us.  We met in Puerto Rico many years ago and over dinner had a long discussion about the importance of protecting his songs and interests as a songwriter.

“Today I personally feel gratified and honored to welcome Don Omar to EMI Music Publishing and look forward to working together for many years to come.”
